Around here, a truck earns its keep on the weekend. The boat heads to the lake, the camper heads north, and the trailer full of whatever needs moving heads wherever it needs to go. That is exactly why so many F-150 owners asked Ford the same question after BlueCruise came out: can it tow hands-free?
For the 2027 model year, the answer is yes. BlueCruise with Towing lets a BlueCruise-equipped 2027 F-150 drive hands-free on Blue Zone highways with a trailer behind it. There are some rules, and how you order your truck decides how much trailer it can handle, so here is everything you need to know before you spec one at Jay Malone Ford in Hutchinson.
Quick Answer
BlueCruise with Towing lets a BlueCruise-equipped 2027 Ford F-150 drive hands-free on Blue Zone highways while towing a trailer. With the Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle ordered from the factory, it supports up to 10,000 pounds. You need a trailer profile, it tops out at 75 mph, and lane changes are manual.

It is a new BlueCruise feature for the 2027 F-150 that allows hands-free driving while you tow a boat, camper, or trailer. BlueCruise keeps the truck and trailer centered in the lane and manages speed and following distance on pre-mapped highway sections Ford calls Blue Zones.
It is still a hands-free, eyes-on system. Your hands can come off the wheel, but you are the driver, and BlueCruise watches to make sure your eyes stay on the road. Ford says towing was one of the most requested BlueCruise features from F-150 owners, which makes sense — according to Ford, about three out of four F-150 owners tow.
Every BlueCruise-equipped 2027 F-150 can use it. BlueCruise itself isn’t offered on the XL or STX, so in practice that means XLT and up. If BlueCruise is on the truck, the towing feature comes with it.
One important detail: the BlueCruise hardware has to be specified when the truck is ordered. It is not something you add later. Our 2027 Ford F-150 guide covers which series include it and how the trims compare.
Up to 10,000 pounds of trailer weight when the truck is properly configured, or the truck’s own maximum towing capacity, whichever is less. Without the right towing equipment, the hands-free towing limit is lower.
That 10,000-pound figure is a BlueCruise limit, not your truck’s tow rating. Your F-150’s actual towing capacity depends on engine, axle, cab, bed, and equipment, and BlueCruise with Towing will never go beyond what your specific truck is rated to pull. If you tow heavier than 10,000 pounds, the truck can still do the job — you just drive it hands-on.
Heads up: The towing equipment that unlocks the full 10,000 pounds has to be ordered from the factory. It can’t be added after the truck is built, so decide what you plan to tow before you spec your truck.
The Tow/Haul Package and the Max Tow Axle, both selected at the time of order. Here is how that shakes out when you build a 2027 F-150:
| What you need | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| BlueCruise hardware | Required for any hands-free driving, towing or not. Specified at order. |
| Tow/Haul Package | Needed for the higher hands-free towing limit. Not offered with the 3.0L V6 EcoBoost. |
| Max Tow Axle | Paired with Tow/Haul to reach the full 10,000 pounds. Factory order only. |
| The right engine | Because Tow/Haul isn’t offered with the 3.0L, a serious tow build points to the 5.0L V8 or a 3.5L engine. |
That engine detail catches a lot of people. We break down every engine and which ones pair with Tow/Haul in 2027 Ford F-150 engine options: all six engines and which trims get them. If you’re not sure, call us before you order — it’s a five-minute conversation that saves a lot of regret.
Before BlueCruise will tow hands-free, you create a unique trailer profile in the truck with accurate dimensions for the trailer you are pulling. The default trailer profile won’t work — you need a real one for each trailer.
That profile is how the truck understands what’s behind it, so it can steer, accelerate, and brake correctly. If you pull a boat in the summer and a utility trailer in the fall, set up a profile for each one. The feature is designed for conventional trailers, and it won’t engage if the trailer type isn’t compatible. When you take delivery of a BlueCruise-equipped F-150 from us, we’re happy to walk you through setting up your first profile.
With a trailer hooked up, BlueCruise is more conservative. Hands-free lane changes are off, In-Lane Repositioning is off, and speed is capped at 75 mph instead of 80 mph.
| Feature | BlueCruise | BlueCruise with Towing |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-free in Blue Zones | Yes | Yes |
| Maximum speed | 80 mph | 75 mph |
| Hands-free lane changes | Yes | No — change lanes manually |
| In-Lane Repositioning | Yes | No |
| Trailer profile required | No | Yes |
It is designed to step back whenever something isn’t right. BlueCruise with Towing will slow the truck, limit speed, or hand control back to you if it detects:
None of that is a flaw. It’s the system being honest about what it can safely handle, and it’s exactly what you want with a boat or camper behind you.
On Blue Zone highways, which are sections of divided, controlled-access highway that Ford has mapped. Highway 7 through Hutchinson isn’t a controlled-access highway, so you’ll drive hands-on leaving town. Once you reach a Blue Zone on the interstate, BlueCruise can take it from there.
Ford says Blue Zones cover about 97 percent of controlled-access highways in the U.S. and Canada, so for the long hauls — the boat heading up north, the camper headed across the state — most of your interstate miles can be hands-free. Short runs to a local lake on two-lane county roads will still be you at the wheel, same as always.
No. BlueCruise with Towing is included with BlueCruise on equipped 2027 F-150s. There’s no separate charge for the towing feature. What you do need is an active BlueCruise plan, which for 2027 comes as a 90-day trial on equipped trucks, a one-year-plus-90-day plan, or a one-time purchase.
The bigger decision is on the order sheet: BlueCruise hardware, the Tow/Haul Package, and the Max Tow Axle are all choices you lock in when you build the truck. Get those right up front and the hands-free towing is ready when you are.
Key Takeaways

No. The Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow Axle must be ordered from the factory to support the higher hands-free towing limit. They can't be added after the truck is built.
No. Hands-free lane changes and In-Lane Repositioning are not available while towing, so all lane changes are made manually. Speed is also capped at 75 mph.
Yes. You must create a unique trailer profile with accurate dimensions for the trailer you are towing. BlueCruise with Towing will not work with the default trailer profile.
No. BlueCruise with Towing is included with BlueCruise on equipped 2027 F-150s. You need an active BlueCruise plan, but there is no separate charge for the towing feature.
No. BlueCruise only works in Blue Zones on divided, controlled-access highways, and Highway 7 through Hutchinson isn't one. You drive hands-on until you reach a Blue Zone, such as on the interstate.
I love this one because it’s a feature built around how people around here actually use their trucks. Hauling the boat to the lake or the camper up north is part of summer in Minnesota, and a long interstate stretch with a trailer behind you is where a little help makes the biggest difference. If you’re thinking about a 2027 F-150 and you tow, let’s talk through the build together so you get the equipment right the first time.
