Used Ford F-150 Buyer's Guide: 2015-2024 | Jay Malone Ford Hutchinson MN

Used Ford F-150 trucks for sale at Jay Malone Ford in Hutchinson, MN

If you’re shopping for a used Ford F-150 in central Minnesota, you have a lot of options — and a lot of variables to sort through. The 2015–2024 model years cover two distinct truck generations, four major engine families, more than a dozen trim levels, two cab configurations, and 10 years of feature, technology, and capability evolution. This guide walks through every major decision so you can shop with confidence and know exactly what you’re looking at.

F-150 is the #1 best-selling vehicle in America and the #1 best-selling used truck on our lot at Jay Malone Ford. We’ve sold 15 used F-150s in the first 4 months of 2026 alone — more than any other used model. We know what to look for, what the common issues are by year, what holds up in Minnesota winters, and what trim levels actually deliver value at this price point. This guide covers all of it.

Used F-150 Generations: 13th Gen (2015–2020) vs 14th Gen (2021–2024)

The first thing to know about shopping a used F-150 in the 2015–2024 range is that you’re looking at two distinct generations — and the difference between them genuinely matters.

The 13th generation launched for 2015 and ran through 2020. The 14th generation launched for 2021 and is still in production through 2024 (with the next refresh arriving for 2025). They look similar at a glance — both are aluminum-body trucks — but the powertrains, interiors, technology, and capability are noticeably different.

Feature13th Gen (2015–2020)14th Gen (2021–2024)
BodyAluminum (first-year 2015)Aluminum, refined

Hybrid available?NoYes — 3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid (430 hp)

On-board generatorNot availablePro Power Onboard (2.4kW / 7.2kW)
TailgateStandard tailgateOptional work surface tailgate
Max tow (properly equipped)Up to 13,200 lbsUp to 14,000 lbs

The decision between 13th and 14th gen usually comes down to budget. A 2018 13th-gen F-150 with reasonable mileage runs significantly less than a comparable 2022 14th-gen truck — often $10,000-$15,000 less for similar trim and equipment. Both are great trucks. The 14th gen gives you newer technology, the optional hybrid, and Pro Power Onboard. The 13th gen gives you more truck for your money if you don’t need the latest tech.

Used F-150 Engine Options 2015–2024

Across the 2015–2024 range, the F-150 has been offered with as many as five engine choices in a single model year. Here’s what you’ll find on used trucks at our price points:

2.7L EcoBoost V6

Years: 2015–2024 (refreshed for 2018 and again for 2021)

Output: 325 hp / 375 lb-ft (early), up to 400 lb-ft in later years

Best for: Daily drivers who want EcoBoost responsiveness and better fuel economy than a V8. Strong, surprisingly capable, often the “sweet spot” choice for buyers who tow occasionally.

3.5L EcoBoost V6

Years: 2015–2024 (significant refresh for 2017 and 2021)

Output: 365–400 hp / 420–500 lb-ft depending on year

Best for: Towing and hauling. Highest tow rating in the gas lineup. The high-output version powers the Raptor. If you tow regularly — campers, livestock trailers, equipment — this is the engine to look for.

5.0L Coyote V8

Years: 2015–2024 (refreshed for 2018 and 2021)

Output: 385 hp / 387 lb-ft (early), up to 400 hp / 410 lb-ft in later years

Best for: V8 traditionalists. Naturally aspirated, simple, well-proven Coyote architecture (same family as the Mustang V8). Slightly lower tow rating than 3.5L EcoBoost but many buyers prefer V8 character and the long-term reliability story.

3.5L PowerBoost Hybrid

Years: 2021–2024 (14th gen only)

Output: 430 hp / 570 lb-ft combined

Best for: Buyers who want maximum capability with strong fuel economy and the Pro Power Onboard 7.2kW generator option. Excellent for jobsite work, tailgating, and as a backup power source in MN power outages. Highest combined output in the F-150 lineup short of the Raptor.

3.3L V6 (base)

Years: 2018–2024 (replaced the 2015–2017 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 base engine)

Output: 290 hp / 265 lb-ft

Best for: Fleet, work truck, and entry-level XL/XLT buyers who don’t need heavy towing. Solid engine but underpowered for serious truck work.

There’s also a 3.0L Power Stroke diesel V6 that was available 2018–2021 in limited numbers. It produced 250 hp / 440 lb-ft and offered excellent fuel economy, but Ford discontinued it because of low take rate. You’ll occasionally see one on the used market — they hold their value well, but parts and service are more specialized than the gas options.

Used F-150 Trim Levels: What Each One Delivers

Across 2015–2024, Ford offered the F-150 in roughly the same trim hierarchy with minor naming and equipment changes over the years. Here’s what to look for:

TrimBest ForWhat You Get
XLFleet, work, value buyersBasic interior, vinyl or cloth seats, work-focused. Often base engine and 4x2.
STXSport-styled valueXL base with sport appearance package. Often EcoBoost engine, 4x4 available.
XLTMost popular trim for central MN buyersPower features, cloth seats, FordPass, SYNC 3 or 4, good capability options. Best balance of price and features.
LariatComfort and tech focusedLeather seats, dual-zone climate, upgraded audio, larger touchscreen, heated front seats standard. Available with most engines.
King RanchWestern-themed luxuryDistinctive leather interior, premium audio, full feature set. Heavily optioned. 14th gen variant is especially well-equipped.
PlatinumFull luxury, all techTop-tier leather, premium audio, full driver-assist suite, panoramic moonroof option, B&O sound.
LimitedFlagshipTop of the lineup. High-output 3.5L EcoBoost standard (later years), all tech features standard.
TremorOff-road, 14th gen onlyAvailable 2021+. Off-road suspension, skid plates, locking rear diff, dual-rate shocks, 33-inch tires. Lariat-based.
RaptorMaximum off-road performanceHigh-output 3.5L EcoBoost (450 hp), FOX shocks, unique bodywork, BFGoodrich KO2 tires. Premium pricing on the used market.

For most central Minnesota buyers, the XLT and Lariat trims are the sweet spot. XLT delivers everything most truck buyers actually need without the price jump to Lariat. Lariat adds leather and dual-zone climate — meaningful upgrades for a daily driver but a price increase of $5,000-$8,000 on the used market.

Which Year Used F-150 Is the Best to Buy?

The honest answer: the “best” year depends on your budget, your priorities, and what’s available right now. But here’s how we’d break it down for central MN truck buyers in 2026:

If your budget is $20,000-$30,000:

Look at 2018-2020 F-150 XLT or Lariat with EcoBoost. By 2018, Ford had refreshed the 13th gen significantly: updated transmissions, refined EcoBoost engines, improved interior tech (SYNC 3 standard), and the 3.3L base V6 had replaced the older 3.5L Ti-VCT. These are mature, well-sorted trucks at strong values. The 2.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost in this range is hard to beat.

If your budget is $30,000-$45,000:

Look at 2021-2022 F-150 XLT or Lariat. These are the first model years of the 14th gen — new platform, new SYNC 4, hybrid available, BlueCruise available. Significant feature jump over the 13th gen at a price that’s already taken the initial depreciation hit. The 2022 model year added a few refinements over 2021 launch trucks and is often the better value.

If your budget is $45,000-$60,000:

Look at 2023-2024 F-150 Lariat, King Ranch, or Platinum. Almost-new trucks, often Ford Blue Certified eligible (giving you a factory-backed warranty), latest features, lowest mileage. Strong choice if you want near-new without the new-truck price.

If you want the maximum value:

Look at 2015-2017 F-150 XLT with the 5.0L V8. These trucks have already taken most of their depreciation. The 5.0L V8 is well-proven, easy to service, and 2015 was the first model year of the aluminum body design (which has now been thoroughly road-tested). Under $20,000 buys a lot of capability if you’re willing to take a higher-mileage truck.

Years to be more cautious about: The early 2015 model year (first year of aluminum body) had some isolated quality issues that Ford resolved by 2016. The 2017 introduction of the 10-speed automatic also had some early calibration concerns that were addressed in service campaigns by 2018. Neither is a deal-breaker — just things to verify on a specific truck. Our service team inspects for known issues before any used F-150 gets priced for sale.

Common Issues by Year — What to Inspect

Every truck has potential issues to watch for. Here’s what our service department typically looks at on used F-150s, by generation and engine family:

13th gen (2015–2020) common items

  • Aluminum body care: Aluminum doesn’t rust like steel but it can pit and corrode if damaged. Inspect for prior body repair quality, especially on Minnesota trucks exposed to road salt.
  • Cam phasers on 5.0L V8 (2018+): Some 2018+ 5.0L engines have reported phaser noise on cold start. Ford issued a service campaign. Easy to identify on a test drive.
  • 10-speed transmission (2017+): Early 10-speed transmissions had calibration issues. Most have been addressed via TSB updates. A test drive with attention to shift quality reveals any remaining concerns.
  • EcoBoost intercooler condensation: 3.5L EcoBoost trucks (pre-2017) had reports of condensation in the intercooler causing rough running. Resolved in later production. Mostly a non-issue on 2017+ trucks.
  • SYNC 3 reliability: Most SYNC 3 issues are software-related and resolve via updates. Newer 14th gen SYNC 4 is more reliable.

14th gen (2021–2024) common items

  • Early launch software: First-year 2021 trucks had some SYNC 4 and electrical software issues that were resolved by 2022 production and via dealer software updates.
  • PowerBoost Hybrid battery cooling: Early PowerBoost trucks had a service campaign related to high-voltage battery cooling. Ford addressed this under warranty.
  • BlueCruise calibration: Software-based, resolved through updates. Most 2022+ trucks running current firmware are working well.
  • Body and panel fit: 2021 launch trucks had some panel-gap variability. By 2022 production this was tightened up.

What our pre-sale inspection covers on every used F-150

  • Engine performance, cold start, leaks, and all fluid levels and condition
  • Transmission shift quality across all gears, including the 10-speed’s lower gears under load
  • 4x4 transfer case engagement, ABS, traction control, hill descent, and trail control modes
  • Brakes, rotors, calipers, pads, and parking brake
  • Tires (tread, age, pressure, wear pattern) and wheel alignment
  • Suspension, shocks, struts, ball joints, tie rods, and frame inspection
  • Body integrity, prior damage check, aluminum body repair quality if applicable
  • HVAC, heated seats, heated steering wheel (essential MN inspections)
  • SYNC operation, all cameras, sensors, driver-assist features
  • All recall and Technical Service Bulletin compliance

Towing and Payload Across Model Years

If you’re shopping a used F-150 specifically for towing, here’s what to know:

Year Range / EngineMax Tow (properly equipped)Max Payload
2015-2017 / 3.5L EcoBoost12,200 lbs3,300 lbs
2018-2020 / 3.5L EcoBoost13,200 lbs3,270 lbs
2021-2024 / 3.5L EcoBoost14,000 lbs3,325 lbs
2015-2020 / 5.0L V811,400 lbs (2015), up to 11,600 lbs (2020)3,260 lbs
2021-2024 / 5.0L V813,000 lbs3,325 lbs
2021-2024 / PowerBoost Hybrid12,700 lbs2,120 lbs
2015-2024 / 2.7L EcoBoost9,000–10,100 lbs2,470 lbs

Maximum tow ratings require the Max Trailer Tow Package (heavier rear axle ratio, integrated trailer brake controller, upgraded cooling). On used trucks, verify the specific configuration — window sticker, build sheet, or VIN decode tells you whether this package was included from the factory. Without it, real-world tow ratings can be several thousand pounds lower than the max number.

For central MN buyers towing pontoons, fishing boats, livestock trailers, and small campers, almost any properly equipped F-150 in this year range handles those loads comfortably. Where engine choice really matters is for heavier loads — large travel trailers, fifth wheels, equipment trailers — where the 3.5L EcoBoost or 5.0L V8 with Max Tow Package becomes the right call.

Used F-150 in Minnesota Winters: What to Look For

The F-150 is one of the more weather-capable trucks you can buy used in this market. Here’s what matters for MN buyers:

4x4 vs 4x2: For central Minnesota, look for 4x4. Used 4x4 F-150s hold their value better, are far more usable in winter, and command less of a premium than you might expect — often $1,500-$2,500 more than 4x2 of the same trim and year. The Electronic Shift-On-the-Fly system on most trims is reliable and easy to use.

Remote Start: Available on XLT and above. On the used market, factor this in — January in Hutchinson is meaningfully different in a truck with Remote Start vs one without. Most 14th gen trucks have it standard or as part of the equipment group.

Heated seats/steering wheel: Standard on Lariat and above (front seats). Heated rear seats often available with Lariat with Equipment Group 502A or higher. Heated steering wheel standard on Lariat-and-above 14th gen trucks.

Tires: Original equipment tires are typically all-season. Real winter performance comes from dedicated snow tires. Plan to budget for a winter tire set if you’re commuting daily — we have full tire service in our service department and can match you to a winter setup that fits your truck and budget.

Aluminum body: Aluminum doesn’t rust like steel, which is a real advantage in Minnesota where salt is on the roads November through April. The catch: aluminum repair requires specialized training, which is why our body shop is set up for it. Most independent body shops aren’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which year used Ford F-150 is the most reliable?

The 2018-2020 model years of the 13th-generation F-150 are widely considered the most reliable of the 2015-2024 range. By 2018, Ford had refined the aluminum body construction, updated the EcoBoost engines, and refreshed interior technology with SYNC 3. The 5.0L V8 in these years is particularly well-proven. For 14th gen, the 2022-2024 model years benefit from launch-year refinements and are running well.

Should I buy a used F-150 with EcoBoost or V8?

Both are excellent. The 2.7L EcoBoost offers strong everyday performance with better fuel economy. The 3.5L EcoBoost delivers the highest tow ratings in the gas lineup. The 5.0L Coyote V8 offers naturally aspirated reliability, simpler architecture, and the V8 sound and torque feel many truck buyers prefer. Choose EcoBoost if fuel economy or maximum towing matters most. Choose V8 if you prefer naturally aspirated simplicity and don't mind slightly lower fuel economy.

What is Ford Blue Certified and is a used F-150 eligible?

Ford Blue Certified is Ford's factory certified pre-owned program. F-150s up to 10 years old with under 120,000 miles may qualify. Certification adds a 139-point inspection, a factory-backed Limited Warranty extending powertrain coverage, and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Browse the Ford Blue Certified F-150 inventory at Jay Malone Ford for current eligible trucks.

How much should I expect to pay for a used F-150?

Used F-150 prices vary significantly by year, trim, and mileage. Typical ranges on the central Minnesota market: 2015-2017 trucks run $15,000-$38,000 depending on trim; 2018-2020 trucks $20,000-$52,000; 2021-2022 trucks $28,000-$68,000; 2023-2024 trucks $36,000-$78,000. Trim level (XL through Limited) and engine choice drive most of the variation within each year range.

Is a used F-150 with high mileage worth buying?

The F-150 is well-engineered for high-mileage durability. F-150s commonly reach 200,000+ miles with regular maintenance, especially the 5.0L V8 and properly maintained EcoBoost engines. A higher-mileage truck from a known service history is often a better buy than a lower-mileage truck with unknown maintenance. We inspect every used F-150 regardless of mileage and won't put one on our lot we don't stand behind.

What's the difference between F-150 XLT and Lariat?

XLT is the most popular F-150 trim and offers cloth seats, power features, SYNC infotainment, and most everyday comfort options. Lariat steps up to leather seating surfaces, dual-zone automatic climate control, upgraded audio, larger touchscreen, and heated front seats as standard. On the used market, Lariat typically costs $5,000-$8,000 more than a comparably equipped XLT. For most central MN buyers, XLT is the value sweet spot.

Does the aluminum body on the F-150 cause problems?

No — the aluminum body has been in production since 2015 and is well-proven. It actually offers an advantage in Minnesota because it doesn't rust like steel from road salt exposure. The one consideration is that aluminum body repair requires specialized training and equipment. Our body shop is fully equipped for aluminum repair, which is not the case at every independent shop in the area.

Can I finance a used F-150 with bad credit?

Yes. Our finance team works with multiple lenders covering a range of credit profiles including buyers rebuilding credit. Get pre-qualified with Capital One through our website with no impact to your credit score, or apply for financing directly. We'll find the best path available for your specific situation.

What's included in your used F-150 inspection?

Every used F-150 on the Jay Malone Ford lot is inspected by our Ford-certified technicians before being priced for sale. The inspection covers engine performance, transmission, 4x4 system, brakes, tires, suspension, electrical, HVAC, safety systems, body integrity, and all applicable recalls and Technical Service Bulletins. Items below our standard are addressed before listing, or the vehicle is sent to wholesale auction.
