How Often Does Your Vehicle Actually Need an Oil Change?
Less often than you were told, and we would rather say so than sell you an oil change you do not need.
The 3,000-mile rule is decades out of date. It came from an era of conventional oils and engines that ran dirtier than anything built in the last twenty years. On a modern vehicle, following it means paying for oil changes you do not need and sending usable oil to be recycled.
What to use instead, in order of authority: your owner's manual, then your vehicle's oil-life monitor if it has one. Most Fords built in the last fifteen years have an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor that watches how the engine is actually being driven — cold starts, idling, towing, short trips — and tells you when the oil is done rather than guessing from mileage alone. Trust it over a sticker.
Minnesota is a "severe duty" climate more often than people think. Short winter trips where the engine never fully warms up, extended idling to defrost, and towing in summer heat all shorten oil life — and all three describe a normal year around Hutchinson.
