What’s Coming Next — The Next-Gen EREV Lightning

Ford has described the next-generation Lightning as an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) — meaning it will combine an electric powertrain for everyday driving with a generator-backed extended range for longer trips or heavy towing use. Ford says the goal is “the best of both worlds” — a primarily electric driving experience without the range limitations that were the most common concern Lightning buyers raised.
