Quick Answer
Factory warranty and recall work has to go through a franchise Ford dealer, and an online-only retailer is not one. You are going to end up standing at a dealership service counter either way — the only real question is whether it is one where somebody knows your name. At Jay Malone Ford in Hutchinson, you work with one salesperson from the first question to the keys, Nick Betker handles your paperwork, and the same building takes care of your vehicle for as long as you own it.
If you have spent any time shopping for a vehicle online lately, you have seen the pitch: skip the dealership entirely, click a few buttons, and a truck shows up on a carrier. It is a genuinely appealing idea, and parts of it are worth stealing — we have adopted a lot of them ourselves.
But there is a part of vehicle ownership that no website can do for you, and it starts the day after delivery. This is an honest look at what buying from a local Ford dealer in Hutchinson actually gets you, what it does not, and where the online-only route genuinely leaves you on your own.

At a franchise Ford dealer. That is the part the online-only pitch tends to leave out.
Factory warranty repairs and open safety recalls on a new Ford have to be performed by a Ford dealer, because that is who Ford authorizes and reimburses for the work. An online-only retailer can sell you the vehicle, but it cannot close out a recall or file a warranty claim. When something needs attention, you are coming to a dealership regardless.
To be fair about it: that dealer does not have to be us. Any Ford store can handle warranty and recall work, and we would never tell you otherwise. But there is a practical difference between walking into a service drive as a stranger and walking into one where your name is already in the system, your salesperson is thirty feet away, and the technician who does the work also inspected the vehicle before it went on our lot.
Worth knowing on the flip side: we will service your vehicle whether or not you bought it here. Oil changes, brakes, tires, diagnostics — you do not need a purchase history with us to get on the schedule. Factory warranty work is the piece that requires a new Ford, and our service department handles all makes and models for everything else.
It also matters who is holding the wrench. Two of our technicians, Colton and Josh, are Ford Senior Master Technicians — Ford's highest technician certification — and both also hold the Ford Electric Vehicle Master Achievement. They are among just 443 technicians in the Twin Cities region to hold the Senior Master title, and 284 certified to service Ford's electric lineup. Having two of them under one roof in a town of 14,000 is not an accident, and it is not something a website can offer you.
If you want to check whether a vehicle you already own has an open recall, our service manager Brady Forst wrote a walkthrough on how to check if your Ford has an open recall.
One salesperson, start to finish. Then Nick Betker, our Finance Manager, handles the paperwork. That is the whole cast.
We are a small store, and that shapes the experience more than anything else we could tell you. You are not handed off between a lead responder, a product specialist, a closer, and a finance office you have never met. The person who answers your first question about a Bronco is the person who hands you the keys. Nick sits down with you for the paperwork, and he is the same person you would call two years later with a question about your service contract.
You will also see everyone's face while you are here. Jay, Jake, and Jordan are in the building. The service and parts teams are down the hall. It is one location, and there is nowhere for anybody to hide — which we consider a feature.
Key Takeaways
Yes — and this is the part most people do not realize. Almost everything that makes online car shopping appealing is already available here.
You can browse real inventory with real photos, get a value on your trade, and get pre-qualified without ever picking up the phone:
We are also happy to do the whole conversation by text or email if that is how you prefer to communicate. Honestly, most of ours start that way now. Our sales text line is (320) 317-2079. Send a question at nine at night, and you will get an answer — no phone tag, no pressure, no sitting in an office while somebody "goes to talk to their manager."
We deliver. The paperwork gets signed here at the dealership.
We know that is one extra trip compared to a fully remote purchase, so here is the honest reason: vehicle purchase fraud and identity theft are real problems in this business, and signing in person with identification in hand is the most effective protection against somebody buying a vehicle in your name. It is a safeguard for you at least as much as it is for us. Nick will have everything prepared before you sit down, so the appointment is short.
Once you own the vehicle, the convenience picks up on the service side. We offer loaner vehicles and a free shuttle, and for Hutchinson residents we offer service pickup and delivery — we come get the vehicle, service it, and bring it back.
You call us, and you talk to the same people. That is the entire premise of our motto, "Your Dealer for Life," and it is the reason we bother to have one.
Selling the vehicle is the beginning of the relationship, not the end of it. The service drive is where you see the same families year after year, and that is really where a phrase like "dealer for life" either gets earned or gets exposed. Our service department has been voted Best Auto Mechanic in Hutchinson by readers of The Hutchinson Station — alongside Best Place to Buy a Vehicle, Best Place to Buy Tires, and Best Auto Body Shop, and we have been voted best more than once. Those are not manufacturer awards or industry rankings. They are our neighbors voting.
Here is something most buyers never think about: the amount of training sitting behind the person helping you. A Senior Master Technician is essentially in school forever, because the vehicles change every single year. Our sales team spends hours in product training before they hand anybody a set of keys. None of that is for our benefit — it is so that when a neighbor comes in, they leave actually understanding the vehicle they are driving home. That matters more in a town this size, because we are going to see that person at the grocery store on Saturday.
Accountability that cannot be closed down, relocated, or restructured out from under you.
Jay Malone did not start out owning dealerships. He started out washing them. From there he moved into the service department, and that is where he learned this business from the ground up. He and Kristen were living in Virginia when their oldest was born, and when Kristen's parents moved back to Minnesota, they followed them home. Jay went around to dealerships looking for a sales job, and that was the start of it.
Just before he turned 30, Jay got his first Ford store, in Clear Lake, Iowa. A couple of years later he was offered a choice between two Minnesota stores — one in Hutchinson and one in St. Peter. He and Kristen drove out to look at Hutchinson, fell in love with the town and the people in it, and made their decision. They sold the Iowa store to come here. In 2005, they took over the dealership at 1165 Highway 7 West.
The building has a longer history than our family does. There has been a dealership at 1165 Highway 7 West for about 45 years. It opened in 1980 as Plowmans, later became Hutchinson Auto Center, and a lot of longtime residents of Hutchinson, Glencoe, Litchfield, and Dassel bought their first vehicle in this building under those names. The Malones have been the family running it since 2005. We are the current stewards of a place this town has been buying vehicles from for four and a half decades.
If you want a single fact that captures what that continuity means, it is this: our parts manager, Joel Froemming, has worked in this building for roughly 45 years. He has been here longer than our family has owned it. He was behind the parts counter under the previous names, and he is behind it today. If you bought a vehicle here in 1985 and walked in tomorrow with a question, there is a real chance the same person would answer it.
Two franchises, one service department, one body shop, one family — all under this roof.
All three of the Malone kids grew up in and around the dealership, playing on the lot and climbing in and out of the cars. Jordan came back to work here in 2018, and Jake followed in 2020. Today it is Jay as Owner, Jake as General Manager, Jordan as Assistant General Manager, Nick Betker in Finance, and Brady Forst running Service — plus Kristen in payroll, and Kristen's parents Tom and Robin Almquist handling the books and HR. It is not just one side of the family in the building. It is both, across three generations.
And the single thing customers mention most? Chloe, the golden retriever in the service drive. There is also usually fresh popcorn.
Chloe, our most frequently mentioned team member.
Because the money stays here, and you can watch where it goes.
The majority of our donation dollars go directly back to the local school districts. Strong schools are what make a town like this work — they are why families move here, why they stay, and why our kids and grandkids are being raised here instead of somewhere else. We also take part in local career fairs, because we want young people here to know a good career is available to them without ever leaving town.
Jay, Jake, and Jordan have all gone through the Hutchinson Leadership Institute, and Brady starts this fall. Jordan serves on the Hutchinson Area Chamber of Commerce board and was President of the Hutchinson Ambassadors in 2025. In 2021, Jay was named Hutchinson Business Person of the Year by the Hutchinson Area Chamber of Commerce; in 2025, Jordan was named Hutchinson Young Leader of the Year by the Hutchinson Jaycees. Both of those meant a great deal to our family, because they came from this community rather than from an industry group.
The support in this town runs both directions. When we put something on, people show up. When somebody else puts something on, we show up. You can see some of what that looks like on our community involvement page. An online-only retailer is never going to sponsor a Hutchinson swim club or a dance team, and there is nothing wrong with that — it is just not what they are built to do.
Because the relationship does not end at delivery. Factory warranty work and recall remedies still have to go through a franchise Ford dealer, and an online-only retailer is not one. At Jay Malone Ford in Hutchinson, the people who sell you the vehicle and the people who service it are in the same building.
Any franchise Ford dealer can perform factory warranty and recall work — it does not have to be the dealer you purchased from. What it cannot be is an online-only retailer, since they are not a franchise dealer.
Yes. We service all makes and models regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Factory warranty work is the one exception that requires a new Ford, but routine maintenance and repairs are open to everyone.
We deliver, but the paperwork is signed here at the dealership. Signing in person with identification is the most effective protection against vehicle purchase fraud and identity theft, so it is a safeguard for you as much as for us.
Yes, right up until signing. Our sales text line is (320) 317-2079, and most of our conversations start by text or email now. You can value your trade and get pre-qualified online before you ever come in.
Two of our technicians, Colton and Josh, are Ford Senior Master Technicians, which is the highest technician certification Ford offers. Both also hold the Ford Electric Vehicle Master Achievement for servicing Ford's electric lineup.
The same salesperson who sold it to you, or Nick Betker for anything related to your paperwork. We are a small store, so the people you met are the people who are still here.
I will be straight with you: if all you want is the lowest possible number on a vehicle you will never need help with, buying online might get you there. That is a real option and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
But most people do need help eventually — a recall notice, a warning light on a Tuesday morning, a trade three years down the road, a question about a service contract nobody explained. Hutchinson welcomed my family with open arms 21 years ago, and we have never forgotten it. We would rather be the people you call when that happens than a checkout page you can never get back to.
Stop by 1165 Highway 7 West, call us at (320) 587-4748, or text sales at (320) 317-2079. We serve Hutchinson, Litchfield, Glencoe, Willmar, Dassel, Silver Lake, Winsted, Brownton, Stewart, and communities across central Minnesota. Chloe will be here too.
