What is the Ford Expedition?
The Ford Expedition is a full-size, body-on-frame, three-row SUV. That body-on-frame construction is the foundation of why it does the things it does. It rides on a dedicated steel ladder frame, the same kind of construction Ford uses on the F-150 and Super Duty® pickups. That frame is what lets the Expedition tow heavy loads without flexing, handle rough roads without breaking down, and hold up under years of family hauling that would wear out a unibody crossover.
Standard seating is up to eight passengers across three rows. Step up to second-row captain’s chairs and you get seven-passenger seating with a center aisle that makes the third row easier to access. Available in two lengths — standard wheelbase and the longer Expedition MAX, which adds substantial cargo space behind the third row.
Every Expedition runs a 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Tremor model and certain Platinum packages step up to the High-Output version of that engine, which makes 440 horsepower. The standard 3.5L makes 400 horsepower — meaningfully more than the typical full-size SUV.
The short version: the Expedition is the SUV you buy when you need three rows of usable space, real towing capacity, and a vehicle that’s built to hold up. It’s the bigger sibling to the Explorer and a different category than the Bronco or Bronco Sport.
What makes the Expedition unique among Ford SUVs?
Ford builds a lot of SUVs. Escape, Explorer, Bronco Sport, Bronco, Mustang Mach-E®, and the Expedition. Each one is built around a different idea of what an SUV is for. Here’s where the Expedition stands apart:
- Body-on-frame construction — only the Bronco and the Expedition share this in Ford’s SUV lineup. Body-on-frame is more durable in heavy use, better at towing, and better at handling rough use than the unibody construction of the Explorer, Escape, and Bronco Sport.
- Three rows of usable space — the Expedition’s third row is genuinely usable for adults on a road trip, not just kids on a short drive. The Explorer’s third row is functional. The Expedition’s third row is comfortable.
- Real towing capacity — available max towing of up to 9,600 lbs (when properly equipped) puts the Expedition in a different league than crossovers. That’s enough for most family campers, larger boats, side-by-side trailers, and horse trailers.
- Available 4x4 with Terrain Management System™ — on the Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch® trims (and optional on Active), Intelligent 4WD includes selectable drive modes including Slippery and Off-Road. The Tremor adds Rock Crawl mode for serious off-pavement use.
- Pro Trailer features standard — Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ and Pro Trailer Hitch Assist are included with Ford Co-Pilot360® 2.0, making backing trailers and hooking up substantially easier.
- The Tremor — new for 2026 — the Expedition’s first off-road model. 440 horsepower, modified Raptor®-derived skid plates, fuel tank underbody protection, 33" all-terrain tires, electronic locking rear differential. A genuine off-road full-size SUV that didn’t exist before.
If you want a road-focused family SUV, the Explorer is probably the right answer. If you want a vehicle that does things the Explorer can’t — tow more, seat more comfortably, handle real off-road terrain — the Expedition is built for that.
What Expedition trims and configurations are offered?
The Expedition lineup at Jay Malone Ford spans four retail trims, each with its own personality:
- Active — the family-focused entry trim. Available in two equipment groups (Select 200A and Touring 202A), with cloth or ActiveX™ seating, the Ford Digital Experience on a 24" panoramic display, and Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 standard. Available 4x2 or 4x4. Offered in standard and MAX (extended) length.
- Tremor® — new for the current model year. The Expedition’s first off-road model. 440-hp 3.5L EcoBoost V6 High-Output engine, modified higher-ride suspension, Raptor-inspired skid plates, fuel tank underbody protection, 33" all-terrain tires, electronic-locking rear differential, Trail Control with Trail One Pedal Drive and Trail Turn Assist, and adds Rock Crawl to the Terrain Management System. 4x4 only.
- Platinum® — the comfort-and-capability flagship for most buyers. Leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, B&O® Sound System by Bang & Olufsen®, BlueCruise Equipped (90-day trial), Ford Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0, available Stealth Appearance, Stealth Performance, Driver’s, and Ultimate Packages. Standard or MAX length. 4x4 only.
- King Ranch® — the luxury Southwest-themed trim. Premium Del Rio leather seats, B&O Unleashed Sound System with 22 speakers, Mesa Del Rio leather interior treatments, BlueCruise Equipped (1-year + 90-day plan included), 22" Sinister Bronze diamond-cut wheels. Standard or MAX length. 4x4 only.
Ford also produces an XL trim, but it’s available exclusively to fleet buyers as the Special Service Vehicle (SSV) configuration. Retail buyers at Jay Malone Ford choose from the four trims above.
For a deeper breakdown of every trim and which one fits your needs, see our current model year Expedition overview — linked at the bottom of this page.
Expedition vs. Expedition MAX: which length is right for you?
The Expedition is offered in two body lengths. Standard length and the longer Expedition MAX. The MAX adds up to 11.8" of extra cargo length and up to 37.4 cubic feet of additional cargo room behind the third row compared to the standard wheelbase. That’s the difference between a third row that fits people OR luggage on a road trip, and a third row that fits people AND luggage on the same trip.
Get the standard-length Expedition if: you want easier maneuvering in tight spaces and parking lots, you don’t regularly use the third row for passengers and cargo simultaneously, your driveway and garage are sized closer to a typical SUV, you want the Tremor (which is standard-length only).
Get the Expedition MAX if: you regularly fill all three rows on family trips, you tow and haul gear together, you take longer family vacations, your garage and driveway have the room. The MAX is genuinely a different vehicle for road trips — once you’ve loaded one up with seven people and luggage, the standard-length feels small.
MAX is available on Active, Platinum, and King Ranch — not on Tremor. If you want the Tremor’s off-road capability, you’re committing to the standard length.
Who should consider a Ford Expedition?
In central Minnesota, we see Expedition buyers fall into a few groups:
Larger families. If you have three kids in car seats or boosters, or two kids and grandparents who ride along regularly, the Expedition’s third row matters. Captain’s chairs in the second row make the third row accessible. The MAX adds the cargo space to bring all the gear that comes with a family of seven.
Boat and camper owners. Available towing of up to 9,600 lbs (when properly equipped) handles most family campers, larger fishing boats, pontoons, and side-by-side trailers. Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow is standard on Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch. Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Pro Trailer Hitch Assist make backing and hooking up trailers substantially easier — especially valuable if you’re solo at a remote launch ramp.
The hunting and outdoor crowd. The Tremor specifically targets this buyer — 33" all-terrain tires, modified suspension, Raptor-derived skid plates, fuel tank underbody protection, electronic-locking rear differential, and Rock Crawl mode. Get to the deer stand, the ice fishing spot, or the lease access road that gets washed out every spring.
Cross-shoppers from full-size pickups. If you’ve been running an F-150 SuperCrew as a family vehicle and the open bed is starting to feel like wasted space, the Expedition gives you most of an F-150’s capability with three rows of enclosed seating instead of a bed.
Buyers stepping up from a smaller SUV. If your Explorer or Highlander is feeling tight, the Expedition is the natural step up. More cargo, more interior space, more towing, more comfort for adults in the third row.
How does the Expedition perform in Minnesota?
Minnesota is well-suited to the Expedition’s strengths, and central Minnesota in particular plays to what this vehicle does well.
Available Intelligent 4WD with Terrain Management System. Standard on Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch. Optional on Active. Selectable drive modes include Slippery (genuinely useful for icy roads on US-7, US-12, and MN-15), Off-Road, Tow/Haul, and on Tremor, Rock Crawl. Auto Stop-Start is standard across the lineup, with the system temporarily disabling when the vehicle senses cold conditions to keep the cabin warm.
Heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel. First-row heated and ventilated seats are standard from Tremor up. Heated second-row seats are standard on Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch. Heated steering wheel is included on Active Touring (202A) and standard on every higher trim. For Hutchinson winters, that combination — pre-heated seats, heated steering wheel, and remote start — turns the worst January mornings into something tolerable.
Engine block heater. Standard on the fleet-only XL configuration and available as a factory option (41H) on every retail trim. We strongly recommend it for Minnesota buyers — the cost is modest and the benefit on -10°F starts is significant.
Tow capability that matches the boats and campers our customers actually own. Pulling a 5,000-lb fishing boat to Belle Lake, a 7,000-lb camper to the Boundary Waters, or a horse trailer down to a county show — the Expedition handles all of those without working hard.
Three rows that get used. Minnesota families travel. Soccer tournaments in Mankato, hockey weekends in Brainerd, family reunions on Lake Mille Lacs. The Expedition’s third row makes those trips work without the kids drawing straws over who has to ride in the back row.
What should I know before buying an Expedition in central Minnesota?
A few practical points we share with every buyer:
Decide between standard and MAX early. The MAX is meaningfully larger. If your garage is sized for a typical SUV, measure before you commit — the MAX is going to need most of a standard 24-foot garage. On the road, you’ll feel the longer wheelbase in tight parking lots and on narrow gravel roads. None of that is bad — it’s the trade-off for the cargo space — but you should know what you’re signing up for.
Think about how often you’ll use all three rows. If the answer is “regularly with passengers and gear,” the MAX is probably worth the upgrade. If the answer is “the third row gets used a few times a year,” standard length is plenty.
Tremor is a different kind of Expedition. 440 horsepower, modified suspension, 33" all-terrain tires — it rides differently than the other trims. More truck-like on highways, more capable off-pavement. If you don’t off-road, you’re paying for capability you won’t use. If you do, it’s the only Expedition built for it. Test drive both a Tremor and a Platinum back-to-back to feel the difference.
Trim choice matters more than you’d expect. The technology stack is similar across trims (24" panoramic display, 13.2" center display, Co-Pilot360, BlueCruise available), but the equipment and feel are different. Active is genuinely capable as a family SUV. Platinum adds B&O sound, leather, and the Stealth/Ultimate packages. King Ranch is its own thing with the Southwest leather and 22-speaker audio. Spend time in each before deciding.
Test drive at highway speeds. The Expedition is a heavy body-on-frame SUV. It rides differently than a unibody crossover — more solid, more truck-like, somewhat heavier feeling steering. We’ll set you up with a real test drive on US-7 or MN-15, not just a loop around the lot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people does the Ford Expedition seat?
Up to eight passengers in the standard configuration with a second-row bench. With second-row captain’s chairs, seating is for seven passengers with a center aisle that makes the third row easier to access.
Is the Expedition’s third row actually usable for adults?
Yes. Unlike many three-row crossovers where the third row is realistically only for kids, the Expedition’s third row is sized for adults on long trips. The Expedition MAX adds even more legroom and cargo space behind the third row, making it a meaningful upgrade if you regularly carry rear-seat passengers and gear together.
How much can the Ford Expedition tow?
Available max towing of up to 9,600 lbs when properly equipped. Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package is standard on Tremor, Platinum, and King Ranch trims, and optional on Active 4x4. For specific tow ratings on the configuration you’re considering, ask us and we’ll pull the exact figure.
What’s the difference between Expedition and Expedition MAX?
The MAX is the longer-wheelbase version. It adds up to 11.8" of extra cargo length and up to 37.4 cubic feet of additional cargo room behind the third row compared to the standard wheelbase. MAX is available on Active, Platinum, and King Ranch — not on Tremor. If you regularly carry passengers and luggage together on family trips, the MAX is meaningfully better. If maneuverability and parking matter more, standard length is the right pick.
Is the Expedition Tremor a real off-road vehicle?
Yes. The Tremor is the Expedition’s first dedicated off-road model. It includes the 440-hp 3.5L EcoBoost High-Output engine, modified higher-ride suspension with premium passive shocks, modified Raptor-derived skid plates with fuel tank underbody protection, 33" all-terrain tires, electronic-locking rear differential, Trail Control with Trail One Pedal Drive and Trail Turn Assist, and adds Rock Crawl mode to the Terrain Management System. It’s a different vehicle than the rest of the lineup, and it’s built around real off-pavement capability.
Is the Expedition good for Minnesota winters?
Yes. Available Intelligent 4WD with Slippery drive mode, available heated front and second-row seats, available heated steering wheel, scheduled remote start (10-speed automatic only), and available engine block heater make it well-suited to central Minnesota winter use. We recommend the engine block heater (option 41H) to almost every Minnesota buyer — the cost is modest and the cold-weather benefit is significant.
